  • Catalogue text

A band of white and blue single leaves against a reddish brown ground. At right angles to the band is the fragmentary beginning of a second band. In addition there is a continuous pattern of small, linked, red, blue, and white flowers, as in Cat. no. 1113 [EA1990.1120].

Three fragments found at Quseir al-Qadim are relevant for this textile. Two have bands with similar single leaves, although they are not blue, and one has the same plant design as the continuous pattern shows (see Vogelsang-Eastwood 1990: Cat. nos. 1, 32, & 36). Radiocarbon analysis of the textile dates it after Quseir al-Qadim's period of occupation, though, to 1535 CE+/- 50. The reverse shows more dye saturation than the surface.
